Skin Cancer: The holistic perspective

LOVE or FEAR the SUN-be informed

If you listen to mainstream information, you will be aware that the sun has been made the bad boy of skin cancer. An entire industry of sunscreens & protection has been formed around this premise.  What we would like to do is provide the other side of the story, based on the scientific data that is not being told; to empower you to make informed choices. We would also like to state that the sun is a holistic life force; meaning that it provides a full spectrum of life giving energy to the mind body & soul. Humans cannot live on this planet under natural law, without the sun. That makes the sun the most powerful creator of life & maintainer of the vital force for human health. For more detail, refer to: Truth about the Sun.

Worldwide Cancer Rates are Rising

There is endless information on this subject & if you wish to tie yourself up in it, there’s plenty to get confused about; & when you consider a conflict of interest for a particular out come on the side of the corporate dollar that regularly funds medical trials & studies, we have a problem!  One fact is definite, skin cancer & cancer rates are rising worldwide; here are some of the findings & causes.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (Causes of death 2011. 3303.0. Commonwealth of Australia 2013), Australia has one of the highest skin cancer incidence and mortality rates in the world. More than 2000 Australians died from skin cancer in 2011.  At least two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer before the age of 70 and over 2000 Australians are treated for skin cancer each day. (Staples M, Elwood M, Burton R, Williams J, Marks R, Giles G. Non-melanoma skin cancer in Australia: the 2002 national survey and trends since 1985. Medical Journal of Australia 2006; 184 (1): 6-10. Fransen M, Karahalios A, Sharma N, English DR, Giles GG, Sinclair RD. Non-melanoma skin cancer in Australia. Medical Journal of Australia 2012; 197(10): 565-8).

Citing US data 2014 statistics indicate that an estimated 76,000 people were diagnosed with melanoma, and 9,700 Americans will die from it (NCI 2014).  Furthermore, according to the National Cancer Institute, over the past 35 years the rate of new melanoma cases among American adults has tripled, from about 8 per 100k people in 1975 to about 24 per 100k in 2010; despite the 4.2% reported increase in sunscreen sales between 2007 & 2012.  Melanoma death rate for white American men, is up about 64% from 2.64 deaths per 100k in 1975 to 4.10 per 100k in 2010.

According to the CDC, since the year 2000, the rates of new melanoma cases among both men and women have been climbing by 1.9% per year. Even teenagers experienced a 2% per year increase between 1973 and 2009 (Wong 2013). For overall skin cancer rates, over two million Americans develop skin cancer annually. In some parts of the world, especially among Western countries, melanoma is becoming more common every year. In the United States, for example, the percentage of people who develop melanoma has more than doubled in the past 30 years.

The SUN is Not to Blame for the Universal Rise in Cancers

According to mainstream media, the governing bodies like the FDA, TGA, WHO & Cancer Council Foundations, the sun is the leading cause of skin cancer. But the following research shows a very different picture, citing the sun as cancer protective.

The esteemed Dr Vieth, (professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology at the University of Toronto; & was also in 1992, the Director of the Bone & Mineral Laboratory at Mt Sinai Hospital) states: sun exposure is associated with substantial risk reduction of various cancers.  Dr Veith’s extensive resreach is the basis of European guidelines for the safe adult intake of vitamin D.

Dr Michael Holick M.D., PhD (one of the world’s foremost experts in vitamin D, author of over 100 medical papers; this is what he said: you should not be sun phobic because being so will increase your risk of many serious diseases.  Consider the sun as a friend and use it sensibly.  Take advantage of its beneficial effects while avoiding the damaging effects due to chronic excessive exposure.  He goes on to state that: sun exposure, especially in childhood is essential for bone & immune health & decreases the risk of chronic illness later in life; such as cancers, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes & depression. (Dark Deception, Discover the Truth about the Benefits of Sunlight Exposure, By: Dr J. Mercola).

Lastly, outdoor workers report lower rates of melanoma (the most invasive skin cancer) than indoor workers (Radespiel-Troger 2009).  Melanoma rates are higher among people who live in northern American cities with less year-round UV intensity than among residents of sunnier cities (Planta 2011). Researchers speculate that higher vitamin D levels for people with regular sun exposure may play a role in reduced melanoma risk (Godar 2011, Newton-Bishop 2011, Field 2011).

The TRUTH is the SUN is Cancer Protective

Most of the body’s vitamin D supply, about 75% of it, is generated by the skin’s exposure to UVB ray. Using a sunscreen drastically lowers or completely blocks the skins ability to produce the cutaneous production of vitamin D3.  Furthermore a low blood level of vitamin D is known to increase the risk for the development of breast & colon cancer & may also accelerate the growth of melanoma. (Garland, Frank C., et al. Geographic variation in breast cancer mortality in the United States: a hypothesis involving exposure to solar radiation. Preventive Medicine, Vol. 19, 1990, pp. 614-22).

SUNSCREENS Toxicity & the Cancer Link

Dr. Gordon Ainsleigh in California believes that the use of sunscreens causes more cancer deaths than it prevents. He estimates that the 17% increase in breast cancer observed between 1991 and 1992 may be the result of the pervasive use of sunscreens over the past decade Recent studies have also shown a higher rate of melanoma among men who regularly use sunscreens and a higher rate of basal cell carcinoma among women using sunscreens.  (Garland, Cedric F., et al.  Could sunscreens increase melanoma risk? American Journal of Public Health, Vol. 82, No. 4, April 1992, pp. 614-15)

Dr. Ainsleigh estimates that 30,000 cancer deaths in the United States alone could be prevented each year if people would adopt a regimen of regular, moderate sun exposure. Ainsleigh, H. Gordon. Beneficial effects of sun exposure on cancer mortality. Preventive Medicine, Vol. 22, February 1993, pp. 132-40.

Rising MELANOMA Rate & Sun Screen Use

Pre 1950’s melanoma skin cancer was rare.  Rates slowly increased through to the mid 1960’s. After this there was a steady increase of melanoma with sunscreen promotion & use.  American figures show sunscreen sales of $18 million in 1972 to $500 million in 1996. In 1980, an American’s lifetime melanoma risk was 1 in 250. Today, it’s 1 in 84.  In Australia, between 1982 & 2010, the age-standardised incidence rate for melanoma increased from 26.7 to 48.5 cases per 100,000 people (Australian Cancer Incidence and Mortality (ACIM) Books – Melanoma of the skin for Australia (ICD10 C43). http://www.aihw.gov.au/acim-books/).

The Australian Cancer Council’s policy of regular sunscreen use as a protective measure against skin cancers, has been partly based on a study conducted by: Green AC, Williams GM, Logan V, Strutton GM Reduced Melanoma After Regular Sunscreen Use: Randomized Trial Follow-Up, Journal of Clinical Oncology, 20 January 2011; 29(3). The trial involved 1,621 fair-skinned only, participants living in Queensland, who are more susceptible to UV radiation exposure.  Ten years after trial cessation, 11 new primary melanomas were diagnosed among the participants who used sunscreen daily. Some 22 were diagnosed among the control group, who used sunscreen at their own discretion instead of monitored, daily use. This striking disparity led researchers to conclude that “melanoma may be preventable by regular sunscreen use in adults”.

Scientific Studies find Sunscreens linked to Melanoma & Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)

However,  this conclusion is misleading as numerous studies concluded that sunscreen use is implicated in skin cancers, especially melanoma; such as a study by Gorham ED1, Mohr SB, Garland CF, Chaplin G, Garland FC., Do sunscreens increase risk of melanoma in populations residing at higher latitudes? See comment in PubMed Commons belowAnn Epidemiol. 2007 Dec 17(12):956-63.; concluding the use of common sunscreen formulations that absorb UVB almost completely, but transmit large quantities of UVA, may contribute to risk of melanoma in populations at latitudes >40 degrees.  Leading to a point of using broad spectrum sunscreen that blocks also UVA radiation.

A number of studies conducted in the 1990s reported higher, not lower, incidence of melanoma among frequent sunscreen users (Autier 1998, Beitner 1990, Westerdahl 2000, Wolf 1998). Researchers have not found strong evidence that sunscreen use prevents basal cell carcinoma (Green 1999, Pandeya 2005, van der Pols 2006, Hunter 1990, Rosenstein 1999, Rubin 2005); although show that regular sunscreen use reduces risk for squamous-cell carcinoma (SCC). Squamous-cell cancer, a slow-growing, treatable disease, is estimated to account for just 16 percent of all skin cancers annually. Of the remaining cancers, 80 percent are basal-cell carcinoma and 4 percent are malignant melanoma, according to a review published by the American Cancer Society (Greelee 2001).

Australian Melanoma Rates in Children

Australian adolescents have by far the highest incidence of malignant melanoma in the world, compared with adolescents in other countries.  In young people aged 12-24 years in Australia, melanoma is the most common cancer, with more than double the number of cases of any other kind of cancer (Stiller CA. International patterns of cancer incidence in adolescents. Cancer Treatment Reviews 2007; 33(7): 631-45.  Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW). Young Australians: Their health and wellbeing 2007. AIHW cat.no. PHE 87. AIHW: Canberra2007).

The Slip, Slop, Slap Campaign a Failure in Preventing Melanoma

34 years ago in 1981 a campaign to educate the Australian population on the apparent dangers of the sun & its link to skin cancer began; with the Slip, Slop, Slap Anti-Cancer Council of Victoria campaign.  The mantra was Slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen and slap on a hat Slip, Slop, Slap! You can stop skin cancer – say: ‘Slip, Slop, Slap! This was the launching pad for aggressive & successful marketing to demonise the sun as the number one cause of skin cancer & the need to protect with daily sunscreen use & reduction of sun exposure

The age group of 12 -24 are the children born after the inception of the Slip, Slop, Slap campaign.  If you allow a decade for a national campaign to take effect on the psyche of the Australian population, this time frame takes us directly to the 24 years bracket. The campaign started in 1981, a time span of 34 years to 2015; (34-10=24 years).  Even if the program was effective immediately that gives the program, another 10 years to have a stronger desired effect; to protect the Australian population from skin cancers & hopefully all cancers too. As cancer across the spectrum are massively increasing, it clearly is a failure & is NOT WORKING!  Sunscreen use has not prevented cancer & is now being exposed as a cause of cancer.

Ozone Depletion & Rise in Cancer

If you think Skin cancer/melanoma rise is specific to Australia due to depletion of the ozone protective effect, think again; rapidly rising skin cancer rates, sun screen use & a reduction of sun exposure trends are also prevalent in the USA, UK & EU.  In 1991 Professor Johan Moan of the Norwegian Cancer Institute made an astounding discovery. He found that the yearly incidence of melanoma in Norway had increased by 350% for men and by 440% for women during the period 1957 to 1984. He also determined that there had been no change in the ozone layer over this period of time. He concludes his report in the British Journal of Cancer by stating “Ozone depletion is not the cause of the increase in skin cancers”. (Moan, J. & Dahlback, A. The relationship between skin cancers, solar radiation and ozone depletion. British Journal of Cancer, Vol. 65, No. 6, June 1992, pp. 916-21). The skin cancer epidemic is a worldwide phenomenon.

Lies, Damned Lies & Statistics

Regardless of the damning research to the contrary, the Australian government still espouses that sun exposure is the cause of around 99% of non-melanoma skin cancers and 95% of melanoma in Australia. The latter statement is nonsense & cannot be verified, especially in the light of the success of the current Sun Smart education systems reducing sun exposure in our younger population, but with no decrease in skin cancers.  This message is still being heavily promoted, with recommendations that all skin exposed to the sun should be covered with sunscreen; including backs of hands, feet & back of neck.

The truth is very different: only 10 percent of all cancer cases are attributed to all forms of radiation, & UV is a very small part of that spectrum. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2515569/

Drs. Cedric & Frank Garland of the University of California point out that, although sunscreens do protect against sunburn, there is no scientific proof that they protect against melanoma or basal cell carcinoma in humans (Dover, Jeffrey S. & Arndt, Kenneth A. Dermatology. Journal of the American Medical Association, Vol. 271, No. 21, June 1, 1994, pp. 1662-63)

And the sad irony is that more Aussie children & young adults are getting malignant melanoma than any other of the same age group in the world, despite 34 years of programming the population to increase the use of sunscreens & reduce sun exposure.

Common Trends Fuelled by Fear

I personally have seen a massive change in public opinion toward the sun with a real fear being the base line of most people’s thinking.  Mothers covering up prams with cloth when they walk outdoors, even in cooler parts of the day & children being forced to wear hats & sunscreen in day care centres & pre-schools from spring to autumn, regardless of the weather.  This is the critical time for the infant/child to have healthy sun exposure to enable growth & development of the brain, nervous system, bone & muscle strength & coordination to name but a few. It is also a time when chemical exposure is more harmful to the developing child.

But it is no wonder that there is so much fear around the sun when official government websites state:

Anyone over the age of six months should use a sunscreen daily. Even those who work inside are exposed to ultraviolet radiation for brief periods throughout the day, especially if they work near windows, which generally filter out UVB but not UVA rays. http://www.skincancer.org

Make Informed Decisions

It is important to make an informed decision & to think beyond what any governing body is telling you, especially if there is invested interests at stake.  Cancer is big business.  The natural cures for all types of cancer are being suppressed by the same corporate giants & governing bodies that are telling the public the cures don’t exist.  Follow the money & the truth will shine light on this ugly side of the equation that no one really wants to talk about it or admit to the deception.

Millions of dollars of funding, academic jobs at stake & Big Pharma revenue is fuelling the program; to whose benefit?  It is our responsibility to be rightly informed, to join the dots & make sensible decisions about what is healthy, natural & has been so for thousands of years.  It is time to wake up & get back to basics, stop fearing & start thinking independently with the common sense that is at the heart of our being.  We need to be sensible in the sun & enjoy it with all its natural health benefits.

This is why we, at Skin Kiss are passionate about our totally natural products & sharing a different story with you.  Having the free will to access broad information & to be able to choose what you feel is right for you.  This is what it means to take responsibility for your own health without the fear of ridicule or fear based dogma being used to keep you in the box. This freedom to choose is our fundamental human right & essential for the general wellbeing of future generations.

The Skin Kiss Message is to be Sensible & Knowledgeable

The sun is the most powerful & vital life force essential for human health.  The two points here is it is powerful & gives us vitality of life.  As with anything that is vital for life, too much of a good thing can & be harmful.  If you have too much water you can drown & likewise if you have too much sun you can burn & get heat stroke.  Common sense & taking personal responsibility when being outdoors in the sun is essential for skin & overall health & wellbeing. This is why we have created the Suncare range & provide holistic sun care tips as a general guide to sensible sun exposure.

Back to Basics-THINK!

Why is it that any long weekends or holiday periods, highways are blocked with heavy traffic moving out of the city?  Becuause the basic instinct of humans is to reconnect with nature, to get out of the rat race, so to speak.  To breathe, to find ourselves & to recharge our vitality. It is our default position to feel the genuine need for being outdoors, in a place that holds a special place in our hearts.  Our spirits are lifted to great heights especially when we are in nature, whether on a beach, in the mountains & trekking across desert or in forests.  Humans are the chosen custodians of the earth & any disconnect to her is going to be felt in our psyche at the core of our being.  The feeling of the sun on our body makes us feel alive & the fresh air of being in the country is filled with vital energy.  This energy is transfered to the food that grows from her soil, in the form of photon light.  We eat this light, when we eat freshly picked food directly from a garden.  The light fades as the time span increases between picking & eating the food. Most people are eating dead food & expecting to be maintain a level of wellness.

Take a moment to reflect; are you eating food that is so fresh, it still retains the photon light which is the life giving force to you?  Do you regularly get outdoors & earth yourself to nature; take your shoes & socks off & walk on the grass or on the sand at the beach?  Do you drink vital & clean water without chemicals & do you think about what you are putting on your skin everyday; interms of chemical poisons? And do you get out into the SUN as often as possible, knowing that the sun is vital for your own longevity; that it is actually responsible for ALL LIFE on this PLANET!

If this is not your scenario, then it may be time to reassess some or a lot of what & how you are living your life.  Being conscious is the first step.  Being informed is the second & all the other steps forward is imagined & designed by YOU!

Dare to be different & in your pursuit of happiness, vitality & wellbeing,

remember, the SUN is your friend & life source; as only

nature knows best
