The Truth About the Sun

The SUN-The best of all self-administered medicines Pliny the Elder Roman scholar

Summary-Benefits of Regular Sun Exposure

ANTI – AGING (for all the benefits listed) & ANTI – CANCER, including skin cancers, synthesises vitamin D³ (hormone), regulation of DNA affecting health of the entire body; regulates the thyroid gland, male & female hormones, increases testosterone by up to 20% with summer sun exposure, increases libido, reduces cholesterol, increases calcium metabolism, increases bone mass, muscle & connective tissue strength, reduces bone wasting diseases such as rickets & reduces all chronic disease, including the reduction of all metabolic diseases such as diabetes, obesity/weight gain & heart/cardiovascular disease, strengthens the immune system, nourishes the nervous system, reduces depression & anxiety, new studies have noted reduction of ADHD like symptoms, & other nervous system hyperactivity disorders; improved sleep via a calming effect & increase in melatonin production in the pineal gland; reduces pain, including sciatic pain, inflammation & swelling;…all of the above & much, much more make the sun the true anti-aging source of life.

The sun is vital for ALL life, not just for what it is famously known-the stimulation of hormones-including the classified vitamin D, required for the holistic health of the entire mind, body & soul.

The Fear of Ageing

The fear of aging is well programmed into the western psyche, targeting women in particular.  So it is easy to convince people to avoid the sun & use chemical sunscreens for beauty reason alone.  Yes, sun exposure can accelerate skin aging, but the sun is vital for life & many other variables accelerate aging faster than the sun. Lack of optimal nutrition, dehydration, chemical exposures, drugs, alcohol, sugar consumption, toxic build up, stress, an indoor lifestyle, application of chemical crèmes, including sunscreens that block essential vitamin D; all increase systemic aging that the skin will expose sooner than later. It is vital to understand a wider viewpoint when it comes to sun bathing & skin health; how to be responsible & how to protect & maintain beautiful skin with healthy sun exposure.

SkinKiss is passionate about providing a holistic alternative to safe, & nutritional sun care that not only allows you to enjoy the sun, your skin will be nourished with essential oils, vitamins & minerals & herbs that promotes healing & a stunning glowing radiance that improves with sun exposure. We are also dedicated to providing you with the holistic paradigms to anti-aging from the inside out; so you truly glow in your skin!

The sun enables life on earth; without it there is no life. So why is there so much fear & misinformation around sun exposure? Humans have had a vital coexistence with sun exposure at the core of our lives; until recent history. What has changed & why? Before we discuss this, it is important to understand the foundations of life & how they affect you.

Getting Back to Basics- Universal Law of Life

There are four principle elements to all life on this planet; the sun (fire), earth (minerals & life forms growing from the living planet), water (H2O hydrogen & oxygen) & air (99% nitrogen, oxygen & 1% trace gases, with carbon dioxide, the bi product of human respiration, being especially important to organic life). These are the physical elements that sustain life, but all life can also be broken down in to the vibrational energy it holds; connecting everything to a divine source of creation.

The SUN is the star at the centre of our solar system & is responsible not only for our climate & weather; it regulates human health. Humans live in this physical world, but too, are energy beings living a divine & hopefully spiritual existence. We derive our health & wellbeing from the four elements with addition to our spirit; our soul connection to the creator of all that is. This is what makes humans unique & with free will, we are given the opportunity to thrive in glowing health on this living earth, in peace & harmony.

The Dis’ ease of Humanity & the Profit Making Machine

But something is wrong. Humans are not thriving; chronic dis’ease is rampant whilst the medical system is growing more & more powerful every year, because illness on every scale is increasing. The hard truth no one wants to hear is that, this industry has a bottom line & that is profit. Money is being made due to the deliberate disconnection of humans with the fundamental principles of life. I do not say this lightly & as a naturopath who has practiced clinically now for over 8 years. I see the harm that is occurring because people have forgotten the principles of organic life, which requires sun exposure, pure unchlorinated/non fluoridated water, living with nature, breathing clean air & eating freshly grown non GMO fruit & vegetables full of minerals & vitamins. People are stressed, confused & anxiety is a big player in people’s lives. I sense the unease & people are starting to realise that the current way of life cannot be sustained. I gain nothing to stand up & put my neck out to be ridiculed, but I see no other way; we are at crisis point & it is time to shake the foundations of what we are taught to believe & apply common sense to what we intuitively feel is the truth.

An overview of some of the health benefits of the sun

  1. ANTI-AGING for the reasons mentioned in this article & much more! We know from epidemiology studies that sun-seekers live longer than those who spend their lives in the shade. Studies such as this one are helping us to understand how the sun can be good for us. Quote: Dr Richard Weller, senior lecturer in Dermatology at Edinburgh University, UK.,Medical News Today Oct. 2014. Read on for more anti-aging phenomena of the sun!
  2. ANTI carcinogenic ANTI CANCER! YES that is the truth! Sunlight has been scientifically shown to protect against as many as seventeen cancers: including melanoma, skin cancer, breast, ovarian, colon, bladder, rectal, endometrial, lung, oesophageal, gallbladder, gastric, pancreatic, prostate, thyroid, renal & non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Grant W.B, An Estimate of Premature Cancer Mortality in the United States Due to Inadequate Ultraviolet-B Radiation. Cancer 94,6 (2002): 1867-1875.  Recent Italian studies showed an increase in survival rate of melanoma patients with increase sun exposure. Rosso S .1, Sera F , Segnan N , Zanetti R .,Sun exposure prior to diagnosis is associated with improved survival in melanoma patients:    results from a long-term follow-up study of Italian patients. European Journal of Cancer, 2008 Jun;44(9):1275-81. doi: 10.1016/j.ejca.2008.03.009. Epub 2008 Apr 10. This study, with similar methods & a longer follow-up, confirms the finding that sun exposure prior to diagnosis of melanoma is associated with improved survival rate.
  3. The sun – a CURE ALL?! Over 50,000 Pub Med*reviews on Vitamin D deficiency published from 1967 to 2013 show low levels of Vit.D are connected with every disease. The listing is summarised: Autism, asthma, diabetes, severe hypoglycaemia, poor wound healing, multiple sclerosis (MS), lupus, kidney & lung disease, 17 types of cancer, glaucoma, macular degeneration, Crohns disease (CD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), ulcerative colitis (UC), high blood pressure (HPT), high cholesterol, OBESITY, Diabetes (NIDDM), depression, ADHD, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), allergies, Tuberculosis (TB), ulcers, cavities, Psorisis (PS), eczema, hormonal disruption, decreased fertility… *Pub Med is the medical & scientific gold standard of clinical studies & peer reviews used in medicine today
  4. The sun is holistic & superior to any artificial sources of light & vitamin D therapy. This is vitally important to understand. You cannot get the huge benefits that the sunlight gives you, by taking a vitamin pill.
  5. The sun comprises of full spectrum light, made up of infra & ultraviolet wavelengths inducing the full spectrum of colour. Exposure to full spectrum light is essential to human health & the maintaining of human. Artificial light is very new & disruptive to human health & evolution of the species. For more information go to: 21: Sunlight, vitality & sleep
  6. The sun’s radiation UVB stimulates Vitamin D3 & DNA replication; vitamin D is actually part of the steroid family of hormones & was classified falsely as a vitamin. This hormone, (which I will continue to call a vitamin because of its classification) is essential for calcium metabolism & DNA replication- the foundation of genetic health. The UVB; wavelengths of 290 to 315 nanometers stimulates the production of vitamin D3 from 7-dehydrocholesterol (7-DHC) in the epidermis of the skin, where it then enters the circulation & is transported to the liver, to form 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 or calcidiol; the major circulating form of vitamin D. Further processes take place in the kidneys to form the most potent form of vitamin D3 –calcitriol, 1alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D.3
  7. The sun regulates cholesterol. It is the UVB radiation of the sun catalysing the hormone under the skin that is then converted in to a 7-dehydocholesterol. Free cholesterol moves back & forth between the skin & bloodstream. Sun exposure catalyses the cholesterol under the surface of the skin communicating with the cholesterol in the blood to replace it; thereby maintaining healthy levels of cholesterol in the blood. Altschul R., Ultraviolet Radiation & Cholesterol Metabolism, Archives of Physical Medicine 36(1955):394 Altschul R,,Hermann H.I, Ultraviolet Radiation & Cholesterol Metabolism: Seventh Annual Meeting of the American Society for the Study of Arteriosclerosis, , Circulation 8(1953):438.
  8. The sun has an anti- obesity effect. As early as 110AD the Greek physician Soranus of Ephesus is recorded as recommending sunbathing as a treatment for reducing obesity. Hobday, R.A., The Healing Sun, 22The link to sunlight & obesity & the reduction of metabolic syndrome & diabetes (NIDDM) is well documented by empirical knowledge over the ages & later in recent scientific studies. Work completed in 2014, by Dr R Weller & Dr S. Gorman has shown a correlation between UV radiation (UVR) & the secretion under the skin of nitric oxide (NO)*. The study went on to show that the secretion of nitric oxide was induced by sunlight was the determining factor in the above reported effects. This supports the fact that sun exposure is far more beneficial & holistic in its effects on humans & animals alike, than taking a Vitamin D supplement. Dr Shelley Gorman, of the Telethon Kids Institute, said, “Our findings are important because they suggest that exposure to sunlight, together with plenty of exercise and a healthy diet, may help prevent the development of obesity in children.” Professor David Ray, of Manchester University, said, “These findings support the idea that a healthy lifestyle should include time outside in the sunshine, not only for exercise, but also to benefit from sunlight on skin.”Dr Richard Elliott, of Diabetes UK, said, “We know that spending more time outdoors contributes to a healthier lifestyle in other ways, such as through exercise.” Dr Martin Feelisch, of Southampton University, said,Our observations indicate that the amounts of nitric oxide released from the skin may have beneficial effects, not only on heart and blood vessels, but also on the way our body regulates metabolism.”  *Nitric oxide (NO) is an important biological regulator & is a fundamental component in the fields of neuroscience , physiology , and immunology . It was proclaimed “ Molecule of the Year ” in 1992. Wikipedia In simple terms Nitric oxide is a molecule that our body produces to help its 50 trillion cells communicate with each other by transmitting signals throughout the entire body; placing NO as essential component for general health & wellbeing!
Nitric oxide has been shown to be important in the following cellular activities: neurological activity by transmitting information between nerve cells in the brain, heart, lung, increasing immunity to fight off bacteria & defending against tumours, regulating blood pressure, reducing inflammation, improve sleep & the 5 senses, increase endurance & strength which can be linked to studies that have shown that sun exposure increases muscle mass & reduces fat tissue.
There have been over 60,000 studies done on nitric oxide in the last 20 years and in 1998, The Nobel Prize for Medicine was given to three scientists that discovered the signalling role of nitric oxide.
  9. The sun, appetite suppressant & fat burning potential – sunlight also increases production of the hormone alpha- melanocyte (alpha MSH), which has been shown to regulate an area of the brain responsible for appetite. Have you noticed that when you spend an adequate time in the sun, you are not hungry?? I notice this effect always. It is only with a lot of exercise that I will then feel hungry! Also alpha MSH helps release fat cells for fuel/burning. This is why exercising outdoors & in the sun is the most efficient way to be healthy. Fehm H. et al The Melanocortin Melanocyte- Stimulating Hormone. Adrenocorticotropoin (4010) Decreases Body Fat in Humans. The Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism 86, No.3 (2001):1144-1147
  10. Sunlight & thyroid gland stimulation has a positive effect on metabolism aiding in healthy weight.
  11. Further fat metabolism evidence of sun & Vitamin D – calcium & vitamin D are known to work in unison to control fat metabolism, with Vitamin D working to regulate the release of leptin, another hormone secreted from fat cells & responsible for satiety & hunger. Shi H., Norman W., Okamura W.H., Sen A.,Zemel M.B., 1 Alpha.25-Dihydroxyvitamin D3 Modulates Human Adipocyte Metabolism Via Nongenomic Action. Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology Journal 15, No,14(2001):2751-2753
  12. The sun & the HEART– sunlight & vitamin D production has a cardio protective & restorative effect, making the sun beneficial & essential for heart health & wellbeing. It has been shown through tests that sun exposure can increase heart strength (measured by the hearts blood flow ability or cardiac output) by as much as 39%. Raymond Johnson J.Pollock,B.E., Mayerson,H.S., Laurens H. The Effect of Carbon-Arc Radiation on Blood Pressure & Cardiac Output. American Journal of Physiology 114(1935):594-602. Furthermore Vitamin D, helps relax blood vessels aiding blood flow, via an effect on specific enzymes that regulate heart blood vessels; thereby lowering high blood pressure. Foreman J.P, Bischoff-Ferrari H.A, Willett W.C, Stampfer M.J, Curhan G.C, Vitamin D Intake and Risk of Incident Hypertension: Results from Three Large Prospective Cohort Studies. Hypertension 46(2005):676. Rostand S.G,Ultraviolet Light May Contribute to Geographic & Racial Blood Pressure Differences, Hypertension 30(1979):594-602.
  13. The sun is cardio-protective & Vitamin D production suppresses & inhibits vascular smooth muscle growth that leads to cardiovascular diseases, whilst anti-inflammatory cytokines activity is increased with sunlight exposure. Michael Holick & Mark Jenkins, The UV Advantage (NY:Simmons & Schuster, 2003), pp:106
  14. The sun increases bone & soft tissue integrity & increases blood flow to muscles, increasing muscle strength & reducing risk of bone wasting diseases, such as osteoporosis & arthritis. More on this topic to come!!!
  15. The sun reduces inflammation & pain; sunlight causes the skin to release beta endorphins which are natural pain killers with morphine like effect & also reduce stress hormones. Walsh J.M., Rabin B.S., Day R., Williams J.N., Choi K., Kang J.D., The Effect of Sunlight on Postoperative Analgesic Medication Use: A Prospective Study of Patients Undergoing Spinal Surgery. Psychosomatic Medicine 67(2005):156-163 FoleyK.M., Kourides I.A., Inturrisi C.E., et al. Beta-Endorphins: Analgesic and Hormone Effects in Humans. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. 76, No 10(1979):5377-5381.
  16. The sun make you feel relaxed & happy, as it has an effect on hormone production, especially increasing serotonin the feel good hormone: with the most effective light for serotonin levels falling between 460-560 nanometres in wavelength coinciding with peak intensity of natural sunlight. This is when we are warned to stay out of the sun! NO wonder depression & other neurological diseases are on the increase in the western world, where there is so much fear around sun exposure.
  17. The sun also increases the hormone testosterone in men. Scientific studies have recorded averages of 20% increases of testosterone, with peak summer sunlight exposure.
  18. The sun also influences female hormones with a positive effect on lutenizing hormone (LH) & ovulation in women. This is thought to occur via the sun’s therapeutic influence on the pineal gland. Studies also show a link to low Vitamin D & calcium metabolism premenstrual syndrome (PMS). We know that sunlight naturally increases serotonin & just prior to menstruation, serotonin levels drop. So a natural way to reduce PMS is to increase natural sunlight leading up to & during the menstrual period.
  19. The sun & immunity – Needless to say the sun is the No. 1 holistic immune system booster. Auto immune conditions are greatly benefitted with sun exposure & a deficiency of sunlight & vitamin D is naturally connected to propensity for an auto immune response due to the systemic effect it has on humans. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is shown to be more prevalent in people who have less sunlight exposure&/or who are not absorbing the numerous benefits; including vitamin D. Holick & Jenkins, The UV Advantage, pp:108. Ebers G. Insufficient Sunshine as a Cause of Multiple Sclerosis: Evidence for the Correlation, Sunlight, Vitamin D and Health, Ed: Oliver Gillie London: Health Research Forum Publishing, 2006. Van der Mei I.A.F., Ponsonby A.l., et al. Past Exposure to Sun, Skin Phenotype, and Risk of Multiple Sclerosis: Case-Control Study, British Medical Journal 327(2003):316. More on this at a later date, but for now; everything listed is the suns effect on immunity!
  20. Sunlight, vitality & sleep – humans have evolved as a part of the day-night cycle with our entire being; our body, brain, nervous system, heart & so on; fully in natural rhythm with the earth’s circadian cycle. When we are exposed to the sunlight, the retina in our eyes project the light to our brain responsible for the biological clock. BUT, did you know that sunlight shining on other parts of our body, including the backs of our knees, will be absorbed & be transported to our brain?! Terman J.S, Terman M., Lo S., Cooper T.B., Circadian Time of Morning Light Administration and Therapeutic Reasponse in Winter Depression. Archives og General Psychiatry 58(2001):69-75 Human’s spend more time indoors than ever before & being exposed to artificial electromagnetic radiation (EMR’s) instead of the natural frequency we have evolved to thrive in, that of the earth & sun. For more on this topic go to the link posted for an informative lecture on EMR’s & the smart grid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4HsxNG2-4M  For healthy serotonin & melatonin levels we are meant to have access to full spectrum light early in the day & we should be going to bed early or by 10 PM. It is important to reduce all unnatural light & radiation exposures, such as those emitted from mobile phones, WiFi, smart meters, T.V. hands free DECT phones & literally all electrical appliances; as these reduce melatonin levels. Melatonin is SO IMPORTANT to human health as it is one of the biggest anti-oxidants produced by our bodies to heal & restore health at night time during sleep. It therefore plays a vital role as an anti-cancer hormone.
  21. Sun & lung health – The sun reduces stress via the relaxing effect it has on the hypothalamic pituitary axis (HPA) & secretion of adrenaline & cortisol etc. We tend to breathe deeper when we are relaxed & the lungs take in more oxygen. Anaerobic bacteria that have been linked to cancer don’t thrive in a well oxygenated state. It is also been found in long term studies that lung cancer survival rates increase with increased vitamin D & sun exposure.
  22. The sun & your brain – this is another massive area for another time, we all feel how amazing the sun is for our state of mental health.
  23. Sun, Vitamin D & your unborn baby – exposure to adequate sunlight & healthy Vitamin D levels in pregnancy influence your baby’s immunity, neurological health & studies have even associated higher IQ & a lower risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), diabetes & chronic digestive diseases in infancy & in early childhood. Continued healthy exposure will guarantee continued strength & vitality over life. Ala-Houhala M.,Koshkinen T., Terho A.,Koivula T.,Visakorpi J., Maternal Compared with Infant Vitamin D Supplementation, Archives of Disease in Childhood No, 61(1986):1159-1163
  24. Sun & kidney health – your kidneys have vitamin D receptors & process this hormone for use in the body. For holistic sun & kidney health, be sure to have two plus litres of filtered water a day with a diet rich in potassium & magnesium & avoid refined sugars & grains that strip your cells of vital minerals for healthy kidneys.
  25. The sun is literally the cure all as Vitamin D activated by the processes of UVB radiation from the sun reacting with 7-dehydrocholesterol under the skin, is involved in cellular information in the DNA.  It is estimated to control at least 1,000 different genes, switching them on & off via VDR’s (vitamin D receptors) found in every cell in the body.

Hidden Scientific History & the Sun’s Health Benefits

The sun & all life have had a healthy coexistence for the entirety of human history; until recently!

There was an era in medicine, in the eighteenth century, known as the Enlightenment, when physics & chemistry became the foundations to modern medicine & from the mid 1700’s sunbathing was recommended by such luminaries’ Waldvogel of Bohemia, Le Peyre, Le Compte & Dr Ebermaien.

This research & recommendations for sunbathing for health continued in to the 19th century with scientists, Cauvin, Dobereiner, Gerard, Hauterive & Bonnet recommending a new system of therapeutic approach to the sun. By 1820 Dr Lachaise observed sunlight gives marked relief from scurvy & rickets & the father of modern sunbathing therapy (heliotherapy) can be attributed to Austrian naturopathic physician Arnold Rikli. He practiced for 51 years, was known as “Doctor Sun“, wrote seven books & attracted patients from all over the world to his clinic. Over a hundred years later an annual Arnold Rikli Light Foundation prize has been established to award & recognize work that deals with the biological effects of light on humans.

At the start of the twentieth century two Nobel prizes were given to sunlight therapist Neil Finsen (1903) & Robert Koch (1905) for their work in light & infectious disease. Prominent surgeon Dr Auguste Rollier used sunlight therapy after becoming disenchanted with the, then, treatment of tuberculosis. His use of heliotherapy lasted for 40 years & his techniques were used by hospitals worldwide. The ongoing work to treat chronic illnesses with sun & light therapy was taken up by many important doctors who were, post WW1 having great success in treating streptococcal skin infections as the sun is a powerful bactericide.

With the discovery of antibiotics in the late 1920’s, synthetic drugs started to replace natural cures at a rapid rate. With the rise of power of the Pharmaceutical giants they have been able to dominate current dogmas by funding the medical schools, controlling the training of doctors & maintaining power in government & legislator agencies, such as the FDA (Food & Drug Association). The quick fix scenario of take a drug for every ailment & go & see your GP who doesn’t learn nutrition, when you are sick, is the norm today. It has, in fact, become abnormal not to take drugs when you are feeling sick.

The Campaign of Fear & the $$ Driven Agenda

Since the 1980’s there has been major programs & laws set in place to reduce every person’s ability to heal themselves through natural means. For more detailed information on this topic you can do your own research & take a look at the work of Gary Null, an investigative journalist. YOUTUBE: Prescription for disasterWar on Health. I do not want to spend much time on this subject as the rabbit hole is very deep & it is not our intention to focus on this side of the problem. We are about solutions & recommend you do your own research for your own journey & get back to simple basics of natural health for wellbeing. It is however important to know a few facts along the way!

The slip, slop, slap campaign started in 1980 by the Cancer Council of Australia. It has been one of the most successful campaigns in perpetuating fear of the sun due to the industry linking sun exposure with cancer. The latest slogan there is no such thing as a safe tan, coined by Dr J.M. Spencer based on his argument that tanning is a protective manoeuvrer by the body in response to skin damage. In a current advertising campaign a black ghoulish growth is shown to spread in the body, depicting a melanoma. Interestingly, the science shows that melanomas are more prevalent with lack of sun exposure!

Misinformation fuelled by a powerful pharmaceutical industry that requires illness for profit & a society that worships youth at any cost; makes the sun an easy target to demonise; especially as the sun has multiple healing properties, which are free & empowering to the human immune system; resulting in massive loss of pharmaceutical profits & a rising of human consciousness. Both of these benefits to humanity are not conducive to corporate greed & control.

Reconnect with Nature & Be Informed

As a naturopath it is part of our founding principles to be doctor as teacher. It is every persons’ fundamental right to access the truth & then exert their own free will to decide the alternative treatments available. The sun is medicine & the earth & nature have always provided answers to vibrant health, living in harmony with nature. It is our choice how much we use what is rightfully ours to enjoy, how much we wish to be informed & how far we want to go to take responsibility for our own health & wellbeing.

If you find yourself questioning the status quo & are feeling a change is in order, start with what has always been there for us, from the very beginning: your instinct to know through your heart & the connection we all share with the natural world. Eat fresh seasonal & local produce, grow your own vegies, herbs, plant a fruit tree or two & if you only have a balcony, grow some herbs in the sun!

Spend more time being mindful with what you do with your spare moments

  • Get outdoors as often as possible.
  • Take your shoes & socks off & reconnect with the earth’s energy. This is called Earthing.

Simple things you can do straight away

At lunch time, instead of sitting at a café, find some grass, a garden or sit under a tree, reflect, think without distractions in a moment of peace & quiet. This will help relax your nervous system that til this point has probably been in sympathetic overdrive. If you are close to the coast, go to the beach & breathe in the healing vapours of salty air & splash in the water; even in winter get your feet wet! You’ll be amazed at how vital you feel.  I will guarantee you that the sun will make an attempt to shine for you in these divine moments with nature.

The sun has a habit of shining when you kindly request it to!!!

From these small mindful moments, big things happen, one step at a time.
